Chief Cairns
I’ll always remember your leadership, without you even saying a word, your willing to listen to another opinion, your guidance on what’s important in life, and of the jiggle of pocket change coming down the hallway at Head Quarters
You were a co-worker, mentor and a gentlemen, thanks for the great memories.

Al was my first Platoon Chief when I started with the BFD in '87. A wonderful understanding man. His calm demeanor and caring nature made all the difference, starting a new job, in a new environment.
Al was always quick with a come back and a joke and cared about his crew. He always took the time to make my life on the job, great.
My only regret is not getting ot see him in recent years. We kept looking for him at Jack Lake, when we visited but our timing was always bad, mostly. We would have loved to have spent some more time with him at the lake.
I shall miss him and will never forget him, he was a true mentor, a great boss and a good friend. I chuckled everytime he would rattle the change in his pocket over his classic joke about getting what you needed at the BFD.
See you on the other side, Al.

We are so very sorry we cannot be with you during this time of your loss.
We were all very saddened to hear of Al’s passing.
It did however prompt many happy memories of time spent with you and your family at the trailer. He was especially loved by all the dogs! I think it was always having those special treats in his pocket for them.
We are very blessed and fortunate to have those happy times to look back on and we'll always remember them with a smile.
Take care and God Bless.

Terry Hubbard, Burlington Fire Department
To me, Al Cairns was larger than life. He was my Platoon Chief, my Mentor, my Co-Instructor at Mohawk College, and above all, he was a cherished friend.
For the rest of my days, I will think of Al and smile whenever I hear change jingling in someone's pocket...
Al missed his wife, adored his family, valued morning coffee with his cronies and loved every moment at the trailer.
He made a huge and lasting impression on his co-workers at the Burlington Fire Department. Al was a kind and compassionate man with a wicked sense of humour and an uncanny ability to read people.
My life was made richer because you were in it, dear friend. I celebrate your peace.
