Obituary of Alice Bernice Smith

On Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Lambton Meadowview Villa, Petrolia, in her 98th year. Beloved mother of Gini and her husband Bob Newman of Petrolia, grandmother of Alicia Newman of Hamilton, Rheana and Mike Criscione of Toronto, Rob and Nicole Newman of Petrolia, and Alexandra Smith of Toronto, and GG of Audrey and Elise Newman, and Malcolm and Alice Criscione. Dear sister of Lona Felker of Stoney Creek. Predeceased by her son Trevor (2001) and her husband of 60 years, Malcolm (2003). Alice was proud to be a breast cancer survivor (20 years). Alice was the oldest of six children born to the late Everett and Effie Nelson. She graduated from Saltfleet High School and the Hamilton General School of Nursing (last living member of the class of 38B). During the war years she was a nurse in a wartime production factory. Following the war she followed Malcolm as he pursued his education and career, first to Ajax and then to Etobicoke where she was honoured by the Red Cross for her years of volunteer service. Finally in 2002, she moved to Petrolia to be near family. Visitors will be received on Thursday, February 6, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Needham-Jay Funeral Home, 4059 Petrolia Line, Petrolia. A Funeral Service celebrating Alice’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2014 from the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek, Ontario, with visitation being held from 12:00 noon until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. Interment in Mountview Gardens Cemetery.
