Obituary of Ronald Allan Costen
COSTEN, Ronald Allan
After a courageous battle, and surrounded by his family in his finaldays, Ron passed away at the age of 84, at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby on November 8, 2013. Predeceased by Dorothy, his beloved wife of 55 years. Cherished father of David (Mary Lou), Robert (Lisa) and Marie (Tom). Proud grand-father of Laura, Jeff, Sean and Wesley Costen and Scott, Anna and Leah McMenemy. Predeceased by his parents Jack and Margaret, his brother Walter and sister Audrey. He will be missed by his many friends in Grimsby, Boshkung Lake, and University of Guelph Alumni communities. Ron was born in Hamilton, Ontario, raised on a fruit farm and attended Winona Public School and Saltfleet High School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree from the Ontario Agricultural College (University of Guelph), and a
Masters of Science from Rutgers University in New Jersey. After brief stops in Bradford, Chatham and
Farnham, PQ, Ron and his family moved to Grimsby, where he has resided for the last 53 years. Ron spent most of his working life with the Chipman Chemical Company. Ron loved his work, for it allowed him to travel the world and make many lifelong friends. Ron was known for his energy. In addition to building a cottage on Boshkung Lake and running a "hobby" farm, Ron's energy and unique fundraising and
administrative talents could be felt in many volunteer organizations with which he was involved. Those included Grimsby Minor Hockey and Football, Grimsby Beach Cubs and Scouts, West Lincoln Big Brothers and Big Sisters, McNally House, OAC alumni and St. Philip's by the Lake
and St. Andrew's Churches. The family would like to thank Dr. Deegan, Elsie Wilson, Doug Smith, the Smithson family, the staff at Lincoln Park and the nursing staff at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. Friends will be received at Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Andrew's Anglican Church, 7 Andrew's Avenue in Grimsby on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at 11 a.m. with interment to follow at Stoney Creek Cemetery at 2 p.m. If so desired, donations to McNally House or University of Guelph would be appreciated.
