My sincere condolences and best wishes to Larry's family, from Australia. I spoke to Larry on a half dozen occasions or so when considering moving from a Glasair II to a Questair Venture, as a result of which I purchased second hand a beautiful Questair kit. Plus a good few emails, where we discussed our former mutual interest in sailing. Such a delightful man, so full of Life, and a real, genuine enthusiast, always genuine, generous and willing to pass on his hard won knowledge. I was so sad to hear of his passing (just today) but be assured there is a little spot in South Australia that will never forget him - a person who we can try to be. There is no limit to how far fine qualities can travel!

I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Woods. He was my teacher at Dundurn School 1960-63. He was not only a great teacher but he also showed us how exciting the world could be outside the walls of our two room school house. I remember him being
so enthusiastic if not intense about so many things. I was lucky enough to get to speak to him just a couple of summers ago. It did not surprise me in the least to hear about all of his accomplishments. I will always have fond memories of him.

It's tough to lose a hero. Larry was my hero-- one of the very few in my life. I answered an ad in the newspaper for someone to help Larry pay his mortgage, and that started a lifelong love of a very special man. I moved into Larry's house in 1973, and left in 1977 to get married.
We spent several years travelling to numerous sailing venues, and the rest of the time soaking up the joys of life. I arrived at Larry's house a young, vulnerable, naive boy, and when I left four years later I was a well adjusted man.
Larry loved to laugh, and we had many. One of my favourite stories is about the time we were towing a Tornado to a regatta in Connecticut and got caught in a speed trap in Massachusetts. Larry handed me his wallet before he was hauled in front of a judge in his living room in the middle of the night, He told the judge that he only had a gas credit card, and would send the money for the fine when he got home. The judge was skeptical but agreed. After a couple of nasty letters from the Commonwealth of the State of Massachusetts, Larry started paying off the fine-- a dollar at a time. He would tape quarters to a piece of cardboard and send the money down to the US. Eventually, someone realized what was going on, and started sending us effusive thank you letters and official receipts. We actually did pay off the fine, and laughed for days about the silliness of the situation.
Another story about Larry is about the time he and I climbed into the Mooney 201 and decided we were going to fly to Plymouth Massachusetts to buy a compass for the current Tornado. Neither of us had an IFR rating, but Larry decided to fly into a cloud bank that we found out later stretched for hundreds of miles. I kept the plane straight and level, while Larry tried to figure out where and how to land without any visual aids. After asking the airport in Utica, NY for some help, (who had no radar) we were transferred to Grifiss AFB and talked down. When we came down out of the clouds, and the runway was right in front of us, I almost fainted from relief. Larry never worried for a moment. His two sons who are air traffic controllers might have disagreed with his decision, but oh well....
Larry also never had any compunctions about asking people to help move boats. We regularly had boats on the front lawn of his house, and I remember one first date with a spectacular woman that ended badly when he corralled the "troops" to move a couple of boats around. She was not impressed, and her heels sunk into the lawn, but Larry didn't think there was an issue.
I could go on for a full day and share stories like this. A few years ago, I was in the neighbourhood and dropped in on Larry at home. It was like I had never left instead of it being 40 years later. Larry always had something going, and in this case he had a plane in pieces in his garage. I couldn't stop smiling-- the more things change, the more they stay the same. I called him a few months ago to try to arrange a lunch date, but we never put it together.
That's the kind of friend he was, and there will never be another one like that in my life.
I will miss him forever, and send my deepest condolences to his family and friends.
Pacem, my friend. You were the best.

Larry is one of the most unforgettable persons I have ever known. He truly was bigger than life. I know that he had a wide range of interests and friends and I count myself fortunate to have known and worked with him on the Questair Venture project. He always had boundless enthusiasm and energy which was sustained for years. I think it can be truly said that the Venture would have faded into oblivion were it not for him. No one can take his place… we are inspired and motivated to continue in his spirit of inventiveness and kind fellowship. He is a prime example of a wonderful human being.

Our deepest condolences on your loss. Larry has been a fixture at the Grimsby Airpark since the beginning. We will miss having him roar down the driveway; coming in with all his own manufactured pieces of airplane parts to make his plane better; complimenting us on keeping the airport tidy and letting us know when we missed a spot while mowing the grass. He was also there to keep an eye on Ralph Sr in his later years. He was so cheerful and such a positive person. He encouraged our boys when they were getting their pilots licence. He was always interested in how our kids were doing and always had a kind word for them. We enjoyed the many conversations in the clubhouse on airplanes, the latest in technology, the worlds financial situation, and any other item that happened to be the topic of the moment. Larry will be sorely missed.

We lost one of the greatest human beings I have ever known. Larry become a close friend from the first time we met and through 30 years that I knew him he never demonstrated a moment of pessimism or bitterness.
On the many assignments he covered for me he always impressed everyone with his amazing overall knowledge on just about any technological trend. He was a tireless worker and embraced it all with an amazing ardent zeal.
Mostly I will miss his spirit, he picked mine up on many a day and I will be forever grateful to him for that..

Larry was always a "glass half full" kind of guy. Always pushing forward with the next idea or concept. The wheels were always in motion. Life was never dull around Larry and all his activities. He shared so much of his vast knowledge with so many and was always keen to help. That's what I remember of Larry. Life was fully "on" when Larry was around.
It was great to know him and to cross paths (sometimes on starboard, sometimes on port) with him. He will be missed but not forgotten.
Sincere condolences to the extended Woods family. Always too soon, but he definitely left his mark.

Hello Liz and family… I was greatly taken aback when Pat told me of Larry's passing … She had read it in the Reformer… Before reading if myself, my words to her echoed your obituary write-up… I said, "He has had a great life and did a lot more than anyone else I know."…
I still recall our days getting Walsh off to a great start thanks to his efforts, not to mention our days racing catamarans all over the place… We were always near the last in our class, but he stayed around the finish line to cheer us on…
I'm sorry that we can't make it down to Stoney Creek, but we'll be there with you in thought and prayer…
He was a great guy!
Love

Larry,
you will be so missed. and remembered forever. may you look down and witness our admiration and love.
For a second you were flying
Like you always wanted to
Now you’ll fly forever
In skies of azure blue
We’ll see your smile in every ray
Of sunshine after rain
And hear the echo of your laughter
Over all the pain
The world’s a little quieter now
The colours have lost their hue
The birds are singing softly
And our hearts are missing you
Each time we see a little cloud
Or a rainbow soaring high
We’ll think of you and gently
Wipe a tear from our eye
By: Victoria Bruce
And to the Wood's family. your pain is ours. only the memories and time itself can bring healing.

Larry will be always be remembered as having such a positive, sharing, and caring attitude.. He gave my brother Brian and I a great start in the Olympic Tornado class by building our first Olympic class Tornado catamaran in 1982. His experience as a school teacher was evident when he shared openly and without hesitation his wealth of knowledge about competing in the Tornado class. He also wrote numerous articles about racing in highly regarded Sailing World magazine.
In the early 80's he invited me to crew for him on his Tornado when I was just getting into the class. Larry flew us down to Key West on his is small plane and was proud of the fact that we made it to Tampa on one tank of gas (with lots to spare). He never stopped laughing on and off the water. He loved to be the first to point out the beauty of the dolphins jumping nearby, cloud formations influencing the wind, or flying fish around us while sailing on the ocean.
Thanks Larry for being so encouraging and for being a great competitor. You will be truly missed.
