I don’t remember a lot from my brother Joe’s early years. Being young then a teenager I guess I was more focused on myself. One story of Joe which I do remember, speaks to his independent nature, takes place when he was maybe 9 or 10 years old. The whole family was having a day out for a picnic and swim on the Grand River near Caledonia. When it was time to leave no one could find Joe. Thinking the worst my parents notified the police to aid in the search. Within a short time, he was picked up by the OPP walking along Highway 6 heading home. It was not long after this that Joe had his first heart operation. The trauma of the operation left Joe in a coma for a time and with health problems that would last his whole life. Joe endured a number of follow up operations through his life but always managed to retain his independence and fighting spirit. May that same spirit help us over the next while come to terms with his passing. Joe may you rest in peace.

One of my earliest memories is of playing along the shoreline at the beach, and being swept under by a big wave. Thankfully, my brother Joe was nearby and he pulled me out of the water.
Being part of a big family means there’s usually always someone looking out for you and as the youngest, I’ve always taken the steady, unobtrusive presence of my family as a given, taken it for granted. Although we were not close, I am here because Joe was looking out for me that day. I am grateful for his watchful eye, and the many threads his life has woven into the fabric of our family.
Safe journey onward, brother. May you rest easy.
