My best knowledge of Ruth is gleaned from 1993-1999 when she was a newly retired missionary and I was the Associate Pastor of Stoney Creek Alliance Church. I learned about her deep resolute purpose and enormous ability to give of herself to others. James Fowler describes those souls who have reached the pinnacle of our Christian faith. He says they are "heedless of the threats to self, to primary groups, and to the institutional arrangements of the present order that are involved. They become a disciplined activist incarnation of the imperatives of absolute love and justice. They engage in spending and being spent for the transformation of the present reality in the direction of a transcendent actuality." Ruth spent her life making the future Kingdom of God a present reality. The world has lost a giant soul. I will always think of her as a model for those who want to bring the "good news" of Jesus to others.
