How my family and I loved our brother-in-law and uncle, Digger. He was family, (not an in-law,) to his wife's family, the Farrells, including me. He always greeted people with a big smile and he usually had a great saying or joke to entertain. He genuinely loved people and looked for the good in everyone. He was a fair and wise man who taught his family to love and respect their extended relatives, which they certainly do. I have never heard him say a harsh word about anyone. He and Laurie raised a large family, some years with little money, but he taught his kids to work hard, as he did. As a result, they have become successful, family-oriented adults. He was proud of them and let them know it. He truly loved his wife Laurie, and shared the credit with her for his wonderful children. He and Laurie left Cape Breton, when work was scarce, with their six kids and moved to Hamilton where he worked at the steel plant. In spite of all the friends he made in Ontario, he missed his island homeland and made the trip back most summers with Laurie and the kids. It was a pleasure for his siblings and his in-laws to see him. In 1970 they has their last child, a son they named Tim, who was the only child born in Ontario. Unfortunately, he predeceased his dad and it was a sadness Digger carried until the day he passed. We know that they are finally together again.
