Obituary of James Gregory Guthro
GUTHRO, James Gregory Peacefully on Tuesday, November 11, 2008, in his 86th year. Beloved husband of Audrey for 59 years. Inspirational Dad of Lisa Guthro and Joel Guthro. Devoted Grandpa of Bryn, Tia and Maia. Jim will be missed by his sisters Geraldine (Vic Copps), Lucille (Jack Pray), and Marie (George Moffatt). James is predeceased by his sister Doreen Royal and brothers Butch and Charles. Uncle Jimmy will be missed by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Born in Nova Scotia, Jim was raised in Hamilton where he began to play the trumpet in his teens. A World War II Veteran, Jim served for four years in the R.C.A.F. and then studied music at the University of Toronto where he produced campus shows. After a brief stint of teaching at Forest Hill Collegiate, Jim began a 30-year career as an award-winning CBC television planning and production director of public affairs and entertainment shows including Front Page Challenge, Close-up and Canadian Timex Jazz. Once retired, Jim took up the trumpet with passion. He played, conducted and arranged music with the East York Symphony, the Encore Symphonic Concert Band and with countless other gigs at clubs, hospitals and schools. A lifelong water lover, Jim sailed his yacht, the Joli, out of the National Yacht Club and wintered at his beachfront home on Crooked Island in the Bahamas. Cremation has taken place. Friends will be received at the DONALD V. BROWN FUNERAL HOME, 36 Lake Avenue Dr., Stoney Creek on Sunday from 10 a.m. until the start of the Memorial Service at 11 a.m. in the chapel. As an expression of sympathy, a donation to help rebuild the Cuban music scene after Hurricane Ike would be appreciated. A musical concert to celebrate Jim's life will be held in the new year at St. Matthew's United Church, Toronto, 416-653-5711 for date and information.
