Gary was my grade 8 teacher at Tweedsmuir. . Then he got me my first job teaching at R A Riddell. He was a teacher and mentor to me. He had common sense and was a great storyteller. He was a great inspiration. I was so confident he had beaten his cancer after contacting him in late 2201, so I was surprised at his passing. My condolences to the Birch family.

Mr. Birch, as I would have called him back in the day, was a mentor of mine at Adelaide Hoodless Elementary School when I was a student there in the 70s. He taught me so much, beyond academics. Decades later when we reconnected at my sister’s wedding, he gave me permission to call him Gary. I had come of age. Gary was a wonderful man. I had the privilege of speaking with him a couple of times this past year. He still had the same spark and character I remembered about him as a boy. Requiescat in pace, Mr. Birch.

We are sorry to hear of Gary's passing. Judy has fond memories of working with Gary at Adelaide Hoodless many many years ago. Gary was always a happy go-lucky Vice Principal who was always one of the gang. Working with Irene in J.K. at Hillsdale, Judy maintained a connection to the Birch family. Our sympathies go out to Irene and the entire family.

My sincere condolences to Irene & family. Gary was such a kind, high energy fellow with always a story to tell. "Did you hear the one about..." The first time I met Gary at Robert Land School, he had an apron on, & was holding a potato masher. It was December of 1986 or 87 & Gary was getting ready to mash the potatoes for the annual Christmas dinner for the students. We chatted briefly as he passed through the room where I was busy typing. I had no idea at that you moment, that he was the Principal of the school.!!! Gary certainly wore many hats.

I was so sad to hear of Gary’s passing.
I was extremely fortunate to be the Township of Glanbrook Planner during the time that Gary was on Glanbrook Council. As a member of Glanbrook Council, Gary was also the Chairman of the Glanbrook Planning Committee for a number of years. As a result of Gary being on Glanbrook’s Council, and especially being the Chairman of Glanbrook’s Planning Committee, I had the distinct pleasure of getting to know Gary on both a professional and personal level.
As such, Gary’s outstanding dedication, insight, research, understanding, fairness and decision making prowess were very significant and greatly appreciated. Gary was extremely personable and always quick with a joke. I admired Gary very much and was so pleased and honoured to have had the opportunity to spend time with Gary and to get to know him both professionally and personally.
My sincere condolences to Irene, Erin and Kyle, and all of his family.
Rest In Peace Gary.

So sad to hear of Gary's passing. Gary came out of retirement to work as a member of the Admin team at Ryerson Middle School. Always had a daily joke to tell, and was the voice of common sense when it came to solving issues. Students ,staff, and parents always respected his strong leadership. Our friendship lasted long past our time working together. My thoughts are with Irene and family. Rest in peace Gary.

I am so sorry for your loss of a great man and friend. Gary was the one who got me started in my career as an Educational Assistant. He was always pulling you into the office to tell you a joke, when you thought you were in trouble. The phone would ring and it was Gary checking up and needed to tell you a joke or one of his great stories. He will be greatly missed by everyone who we knew him. I’m sure he is up above telling everyone his jokes and stories. He will be watching over you everyday .

I am so very sad to learn of Gary’s passing. I taught with him and he was a wonderful principal and truly funny, kind man. I lived on Hall Road and during a bad snowstorm he drove us to his house and then he put me on the back of his snowmobile and took me home. I fell of two times! He was amazing always. Shirley Froman
