Obituary of Vivien Eugeneia Spurgeon-Johnston

Vivien Eugeneia Spurgeon-Johnston
Nee-Thompson

Born-July 28, 1929
Died -November 29, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that the family of
Vivien Spurgeon/Johnston announce the passing of their dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, on November 29th in her 95th year.

With her daughter Corey by her side and loving prayers from all of the family,  she was peacefully welcomed into heaven and reunited with her fondly remembered grandson Sean.

Vivien will be lovingly missed by her 6 children, Glen (Freda), Debbie (Allen), Kevin (Cindy), Wayne (Shari), Corey (Joe) and Martin (Shannon); 11 Grandchilden,
Sean, Ryan (Julie), Jamie (Sheena), Laurie (Gary), Brian (Nikki), Sarah (Phil), David, Kendra (Joel) Kalvin, Evan and Taylor (Mark). And 8 Great-grandchildren, Eric, Haydn, Gavin, Emma, Carter, Brian Junior, Jacob and Gabriel.

She is predeceased by her husband of 34 years (father of her children) Eugene Maurice Spurgeon, second husband William J. Johnston of 15 years, her father Roy Easter Thompson, Step mother Nellie Thompson, her Birth mother Pearl Veri-nee Childs and her grandson Sean Kevin Spurgeon.

Vivien was born in Hamilton in 1929 where she met her husband and married in 1950. They moved to a farm on Fletcher's Rd in Binbrook in 1963. Vivien loved her family and they meant everything to her.  She gave her children many wonderful years and happy memories of country living, that they will always treasure.

After Eugene passed away in 1984 Vivien met William (Bill) Johnston. They married and enjoyed their Retirement years in Kincardine and then in Dunnville where family from both sides enjoyed spending time with them. Bill passed away in 2001 and Vivien moved back to Hamilton a few years later.

Vivien was an avid reader throughout her lifetime. Rarely seen without a book in her hands. She also loved knitting and crocheting, puzzles, watercolor painting, shopping and day tripping.

She enjoyed spending time with her children and their families. She looked forward to the many visits through the years and spending the holidays at each of their homes.  Christmas at Kevin and Cindy's or Wayne and Shari's.  Easter at Debbie and Allen's or Glen and Freda's and she loved taking Thanksgiving trips up north with Martin and Shannon. She always had a wonderful time at the family birthday parties we would throw for her. She was happiest when family was all together.

Vivien spent her final 7 years living on a farm in Port Colborne with her daughter Corey and son-in-law Joe. Once again she was back breathing in the fresh country air but this time it was spent reminiscing about her life and days gone by.

We were fortunate enough to be given the time to give our mom many hugs and kisses and to say our goodbyes.
She told us "it was time for her to go and that she was ready"
She told us that "she had a good life and She loved us all."
She wanted us to promise that we'd enjoy our lives and promise that we would not be sad when she's gone.
It's going to be difficult to keep that second promise.

Our mom will always be remembered for her loving support, her sweet, gentle smile and kind heart. Her delicious home made soups and the best apple pie around.

She said she'll come back to visit as a Swallowtail.
We look forward to summer and await her arrival. ❤

Friends will be received at the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek on Sunday from 12-4 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023 at 1 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel. Interment to follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
