Anna Kennedy and Sonja Horzelenberg posted a condolence

Sonja and Anna regret they couldn't attend the service as they are both out of the country. Here are our thoughts:
In recalling memories of our "one and only uncle" in Canada, we realized how many memories are intertwined with our father's. Although Jan and Wim de Vries were seven years apart in age, they shared remarkable similarities.
Ome Jan followed in our father's footsteps by choosing to be a machinist/millwright as a career. In their spare time, both men enjoyed nothing more than spending time alone in their workshop, creating unique objects, tooling machine parts and working with their wood or metal lathes.
Both men were deeply religious and generous of their time in volunteering for church and community work.
The brothers both chose a Kerkhoven as their spouse by marrying two sisters. Thus began our "double" family. Sonja, Erna and Anna often had to explain to their friends the definition of double cousins, but this "double family" often spent time together in those early years, shuffling between Burlington and Hamilton, hosting Sunday visits and exploring different campgrounds for shared family vacations.
Although small in stature, Ome Jan was a giant in serving his country in war. He was also a hero to his five children and was loved and well looked after by them. His strong sense of family instilled strong family connections among them.
Although the brothers might have come across initially as reserved or quiet, they enjoyed the same sense of subtle humour with good jokes, a twinkle in their eyes, and a hearty laugh.
We know Jan and Wim and their sister Toos will be sharing some laughs and memories in Heaven.

I never had the privilege too have met Oom Jan. But I came to know him through Chris and his children. The way Chris and his children speak about his dad, their opa makes me realise that Oom Jan was a great man, a caring husband and a loving dad and opa. The night that Oom Jan passed Chris, Ashleigh, Ellysia, Jacob and Collin were at our house and all the memories that they shared were of love from their beloved dad and opa. Listening to them I realised that I missed out on knowing a wonderful giant.
Chris I know you will miss your dad but be assured that you did so much for him in the last years and the memories of that no one can take away.
Our sincere condolences to the DeVries family and friends. May God comfort you during your time of mourning.

It is always hard to know what to say in times like these, but I would like to express my deepest sympathy to you all at this difficult time.
Jan/Dad/Opa you were a very loyal, devoted, man of integrity, and the list could go on and on. You opened your home to me like I was a daughter and that will never be forgotten.
Thank you for being an amazing grandfather/opa to Ashleigh, Ellysia and Jacob. I know how very much they loved you.
And great opa to Calita, Zion, and Elora:
I know that your legacy will live on through your children And through the entire family circle.
I know that you will probably be very busy in heaven chatting with many, but if you could say hello to my dad for me, that would be great.

So sorry for your loss. We remember Jan as a wonderful neighbor. When we lived on Gillin Rd we would look forward to Jan's daily walks as he always stopped to chat with us. He often made us laugh with the stories he would tell. Condolences Bryan and Lorraine Howarth

Dear Ann, Chris & Family
We were so pleased to have known Jan. He was a great guy! Memories of him in charge of the "monster industrial dishwasher" at New Covenant (-: He was a faithful servant in so many ways there. Now he can rest safely with his Saviour.
Love & sincere sympathy to you all

Opa, we miss you so much already! We miss your silly jokes and the bright smile that shone on your face when your saw us (your grandchildren or great grandchildren). We are glad you’re longer in pain and happy to carry the new pain of missing you if that means you don’t have to be struggling in pain any longer.
Tell Dad we say hi. See you again soon!
