I had the pleasure of spending time with Liam when we were inpatients at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. I met Liam shortly after he was admitted, during a therapeutic recreation program. At the time, most of the inpatients gathered to make arts and crafts, create designs with melty beads and play card games. Prior to Liam’s arrival, a brand new karaoke machine was added to the ADL lounge, but it just sat there because none of us were singers (or so we thought). Once we learned of Liam’s love for music, a staff member pulled out the karaoke machine. Liam wasted no time singing his go-to songs and busting out his best dance moves. Liam’s energy was infectious and by the end of his night, he managed to get everyone to sing along.
Despite our age difference, Liam and I became good friends. We shared so many laughs and fun times together at Holland Bloorview. We chatted during mealtime; hung out at the nursing station; sang songs and had dance battles wherever we could; played basketball or dodgeball in physiotherapy; wore clown noses just for fun; and the list goes on. My favourite memories of Liam were our pool therapy concerts. It all started one day when Liam and I were scheduled for pool therapy at the same time. At the end of the session, Liam wanted to have a concert, so I sat on the edge of the pool and prepared myself to cheer him on. Michael Jackson’s Black or White was the song of choice. Once the music started playing, Liam insisted that I join in. Despite not knowing many of the lyrics, I eventually picked up on the “oohs” and “yeahs”, and we had a blast. From that moment on, Liam and I had pool therapy together almost every week followed by a pre-planned concert for everyone to enjoy. Many times, Liam introduced me to the ‘audience’ as “Taylor Butler”, which always made everyone chuckle. Michael Jackson songs were definitely his #1 choice, but we switched it up a couple of times and sang Firework and Take Me Home, Country Roads.
Liam, I am fortunate to be able to call you my friend. You were such a beacon of light for all those around you and could always be counted on for a smile, laugh and an incredible concert, of course! Thank you for all of the memories and for teaching me the importance of simply letting loose and having fun, even in the toughest of times. You are most certainly missed and you will always be remembered for the incredible impact you had on the people who had the pleasure of getting to know you. My heartfelt condolences to your family members and friends.

I had the pleasure of meeting Liam and Miranda at Holland Bloorview.
Liam and I were doing therapy at the same time, his physio therapist was walking with him and he had his microphone in his hand and pointed to me and said “I want to dance battle that girl.” So I got up with my physio therapist and then him and I proceeded to dance battle. Obviously with my dusty moves he won. Then suggested that the physio therapists dance battle for fun and we watched them perform, the smile on his face was insanely big and super contagious. Liam and I were very impressed with their moves! Over my admission I watched Liam accomplish amazing things, I watched his concerts and watched him show off his amazing dance moves. I watched as he became friends with everyone. He was always wanting to sing and dance and he LOVED the clowns.
I was in such disbelief to hear that Liam had passed away. Liam was an incredible kid filled with so much love for everyone and was a big part of many peoples journeys.
My deepest condolences and to Liam’s family and friends.
To Liam,
Thank you for being an amazing friend.

Liam was a patient at Holland Bloorview around this time last year. Even before he got here, McMaster was already telling us how lucky and fortunate we were that he was coming to us. From that first day, it was clear that Liam and Miranda would be part of our Bloorview family. He arrived with microphone in hand and would not let you leave the room until you participated in a song. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m not really the song and dance type, but for Liam, everyone was the song and dance type. Liam was a lover of all music, but we remember him most for his Michael Jackson flare and his reciting of the <history of rap>. You can imagine my surprise when entering his room, hearing Jimmy Fallon’s full rap through Liam’s energetic voice along with all the dance moves that corresponded to each era. I was in awe.
As Miranda would say, Liam was a collector of people. There was not a person, patient or staff, who Liam didn’t pull into his team. When walking down the hall, he would be stopped frequently for one song, one dance, and Liam did not disappoint. He brought us all so much joy and was often the bright spot in our days. And the apple did not fall far from the tree.
Liam was at Bloorview during the pandemic so unfortunately we didn’t get to know his other family members. But, If Liam was a collector of people, Miranda was the caretaker of people. Not only Liam, but to a whole unit of children and teens that needed someone there to support them, cheer them on, and reciprocate sass when the teenagers needed it. Watching Liam and Miranda’s relationship was truly something special. Miranda had the perfect mix of supportive when needed, and tough coach when Liam needed a push. She taught us all what compassion can be. We know that with Miranda’s support, Liam would never have doubted his place in this world or the love of his family.
In therapy, Liam was a force to be reckoned with. He brought so much enthusiasm and used his competitive nature to accomplish each task. Nothing was too hard or too out of reach as long as it was a competition. If you were walking by, it would be common to hear smack talk like “you’re going down” or him announcing the next competitor with microphone in hand of course. He lit up the pool, the dance floor, and the hearts of all in the gyms. He managed to get even the quietest of clients to sing, dance, or participate in one of his many sporting games.
To Liam, thank you for bringing so much joy to our days and for reminding us that there can always be one more song and teaching us to meet every challenge with “you’re on”. Your infectious personality and love of music will live on in the walls at Holland Bloorview… We miss you.

Being a new member to the Lawfield team, I only just met Liam this year. However, I feel so grateful for this privilege and he made a lasting impression on me in such a short time. He was always so kind and happy to see me. I will hold dear to my heart the private viewing I got of his incredible Michael Jackson/Thriller show, following successful completion of work in the room I share with Mme. Stetson. It was truly a favourite experience in my career. I’m so glad to have had this opportunity. You couldn’t help but be positively impacted by his joy.

I had the pleasure of teaching Liam’s sister Emily for two years, and teaching Liam art for one year. Liam was the light in my day whenever I saw him. His smile was contagious. Such a sweet, kind soul. I loved hearing him sing and loved his dance moves. He will be missed. Sending my deepest condolences and sympathies to all family and friends of Liam. A very special boy.

The last three years, our Lawfield school community has been blessed by the Butler family. Liam brought joy and light to every day and touched so many lives. He loved to talk, sing BTS and Michael Jackson, and perform for anyone who would watch, including encore presentations. He was not shy and did not hesitate to meet new people and share his love and interests and energies. Liam had groupies just like a band. Primary, Junior and intermediate students - it didn’t matter the age - and most of all staff. We miss him so deeply already. But the memories of his infectious smile, kind energy and genuine soul will remain with us forever, along with Michael Jackson gloves and microphones. Keep singing and dancing Liam. My heart and condolences to Emily, Chris and Miranda. May the happy memories help you through this incredibly challenging time. Thank you for being part of our experience. I am forever grateful for our shared experiences and time together. With love, Tanya Tymkiv

I had the pleasure of having Liam in my class when he first joined the Lawfield school community. He had the most infectious smile and no matter what mood you may have been in, Liam had this magical way of lifting everyone's spirit. He brightened every room that he entered and he never failed to say hello to anyone he passed in the hallways. His kindness, love and passion will truly be missed. Sending the Butler family my deepest and sincerest condolences. Liam left his musical mark on this earth.

It has been a true joy and privilege to know Liam over the past 3 years. Liam’s joyful approach to life and learning have rubbed off on classmates and school staff daily. The light of his spirit will live on forever in the memories we share of his giant smiles, his amazing performances (Thriller was my personal fave), his fist bumps, and his positive approach to life. Sweetest Liam, I will never forget how you lit up our classroom Multiunit classroom at BSA last year. Perhaps it was the sequence jacket and glittering microphone. Or perhaps, more so, it was your heart that shone through. You always made everyone feel special, united and appreciated. I would give anything to hear you and the gang racing down the hallway once more. As Michel would say:
"I know that you can sail across the water, float across the sky, high. Any road that you take will get you there, if you only try." – I will miss the magic you weave, but promise to smile up at your shining star Liam. XO Erica

A couple years ago my son Jensen came home with a note from school from another parent. It was from Liam's mom Miranda explaining how Jensen has made friends with Liam and has been helping him out with different things at school and how thankful she was. I had no idea of anything.
It was Jensen who scored a great friend that day. After many play dates, swimmiing, karate and of course, rock concerts, Liam showed Jensen how to just let loose, have fun and not care what anyone else thinks.
Jensen is really going to miss Liam (as we all will). A piece of Liam will continue to live on through Jensen. Stories will always be shared, dances danced and a laugh shared remembering what a special person he was.

My daughters and I knew Liam and his family through my mom and my younger brothers. I feel blessed to have met such a kind, funny, smart, and outgoing boy. Liam was a great friend to my brothers and he was quite the show man, always singing and putting on performances. I remember hearing BTS for the first time, all because of Liam. Whenever I saw him he never failed to put a smile on everyone’s faces and that’s how I’ll always remember him. Fly high sweet angel, you will be missed. ❤️

I had the pleasure of working with Liam before going on maternity leave and what a pleasure that was. His laughter, smiling face and singing voice knew just how to make any bad day good. My favourite memory shared with Liam was when he would touch and talk to my belly when I was pregnant and feeling under the weather. We shared many laughs and sang and danced during nutrition breaks together or as soon as he arrived to school. Liam your dancing feet and singing voice will forever be the joy of lawfield.

I was so blessed to have been able to spend some time with Liam when he was in the hospital. He wasn’t quite himself but he was still able to rope me in into having a sing off against his mom. After three rounds, he told me I was the big winner and tossed me the imaginary trophy which I proudly held above my head and ran around like a looney tune. But you could with Liam, he made you feel like you could be silly and it was ok. He was right when he said I was the big winner, not because of the trophy, but because I got to have him in my life. You will be missed my little “golden buzzer”. I take comfort in knowing you are singing and dancing with the Angels Choir now. ❤️

I have so many pictures and videos of Liam in the short time we got to spend with him at the hospital. Here's a few. Liams first time using the lift chair all the kids wanted to use. He was so nervous but did it and was so happy we all cheered! He loved pushing nathan around in his wheelchair and eating lunchs together. Liam was like a big brother to nathan for sure! I will never forget all the amazing times we spent together!
