Obituary of William Shaw

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of William (Billy) Shaw at St. Peter’s Hospital after a lengthy illness on May 10, 2024. He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 57 years, and loving caregiver, Marilyn (Gowland). Bill was a cherished father to Jodi (Henry) and Kerri (predeceased)(David). He was a proud grandfather to Darien (Jordan), Cayley, and Alison, and an adoring great-grandfather to Easton. Loved brother-in-law to Jan (late Ron Peet). Billy was predeceased by both his birth parents in Scotland (James and Anne Shaw) and his Earth parents (Henry and Georgina Anthony). He was the adored baby brother of and predeceased by his siblings Robbie (Alberta Anthony), Cissie McMurray, Rena (Phil Durkin), and Mary (Ken Lee). He leaves behind much loved family in Canada and in Scotland who will miss him dearly.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland on June 28, 1944, Bill immigrated to Canada as a 4 year old little boy, and spent his early years surrounded by extended family carving their way in a new country. Bill would maintain his connection across the pond for the remainder of his life, either visiting home or hosting family here in Canada. He was a gifted artist and musician and spent his teens and 20s touring and making wonderful memories with some very talented bands. Eventually he gave up touring to settle down and raise a family with Marilyn, but still loved to play any chance he got. Bill was a talented millwright, working at Stelwire for 35 years finishing his career in the engineering department. He enjoyed golfing, boating, time at the cottage, and watching his beloved Dallas Cowboys. There was nothing Bill loved more than spending time with his grandchildren, and they loved their time with their Pipa.

We would be remiss if we did not express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all those who have cared for Bill over the last 8 years during his many cancers and stroke. A very special thank you to Dr. Solomon and the staff of 3rd floor East at St. Peter’s Hospital who made Bill’s last 7 days on earth so comfortable with their specialised care and attention to his every need.

Friends and family will be received on Tuesday, May 21st from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek with Vigil Prayers at 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend the graveside service to be held on Wednesday, May 22nd at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Angels Cemetery, 681 Mud St E, Stoney Creek. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Assistance Program or Hamilton Health Sciences - St. Peter's Hospital Foundation.
