Obituary of Walter Kenneth Brendon
BRENDON, Walter Kenneth
Peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, at age 85, on April 27, 2016.
Walt was the loving husband, best friend and soul mate of Joan (Poole) for 56 years, and caring "Dad" to David (Brenda Hough), Carolyn (Rob Alexander), Julie (Michael Dembe), and Trina (Paul Djonovich). "Papa" was a fun-loving grandfather to Kerala Brendon; William and Madeleine Alexander; Tovah, Noah, Jonah and Elijah Dembe; and Rya and Burk Djonovich.
Walt attended Delta Secondary School and graduated from McMaster University with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree. He taught high school at Central and Scott Park, and retired from Orchard Park where he was the Head of Science. Walt was a patient, enthusiastic and "cool" teacher who inspired his students in Math and Physics.
Walt had a great sense of humour and was always fun to be around. He loved music and instilled this love in his children and grandchildren, providing the Brendon family "orchestra" with whatever instruments they desired. His piano and guitar playing were sure to start a sing-along at any party. He founded the Missing Links, the "legendary" band that would often perform at family celebrations. Walt enjoyed swimming, racquetball and long-distance running, completing the Skylon Marathon and several Around the Bay Road Races.
After university, Walt had the opportunity to explore Europe and North Africa while with the Air Force. In retirement, Walt and Joan travelled extensively, including wintering in Florida and backpacking in Greece and Turkey. No matter where they went, Walt's outgoing personality and infectious smile drew people to him, resulting in many lifelong friendships.
Walt was predeceased by his parents Anthony and Stella, brother Alfred, and sister-in-law Patricia (Poole) Godfrey.
Special thanks to Cathy, nurses, PSWs and staff of Ridgeview for providing outstanding care for Walt and a supportive environment for our family.
An Open House Visitation will be held at 65 Lakeview Drive, Stoney Creek on Sunday, May 1st, from 2-5 p.m. If desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society.
