Obituary of Angelo Anthony Savelli

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Angelo Anthony Savelli on Saturday, March 16, 2024, in his 87th year. As he peacefully passed into Eternal Life, he was surrounded by loving family who provided comfort and shared happy memories.

Predeceased by his wife Ann Thompson and son Mark, Angelo is survived by sons Michael and Jason (Lisa) and, by his grandchildren Nicolina (Admir), Mark Jr., Jacob (Tikearah), Emma, Kaitlyn and newborn, great granddaughter Aylah Maria.

Preceding him in death were his parents Enrico and Allegrina Savelli, and brothers Joseph (Nicolina), Dino (Evelyn), Gordon (Elisa), Lino (Shirley), Quinto (Margaret), Lawrence (Ada). Left to mourn, his sister Mary and Nello Federiconi, and brother Harry Savelli (Jannie). He is also survived and predeceased by numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Angelo (Dad) expressed two passions throughout his life. He adored his family, and he had a unique love and relationship with sports.  He loved being at home. Home was his castle and he loved having family nearby at all times. He worked tirelessly for 30 years at Stelco Hilton Works in Hamilton and was pleased to retire at the age of 48.

Through his younger years, dad made an impact in local sport communities as he enjoyed and excelled as an amateur boxer, received many trophies and awards playing both baseball and football. As an athlete, he was most recognized, however, for being an exceptional hockey player. So much so, that friends, family, and local sports authorities had no difficulty nicknaming Angelo ‘Keon’ and likening his play to that of Dave Keon, one of dad’s most revered professional hockey players who had played with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

To say that Dad loved sports is somewhat of an understatement. There are no words to really articulate a passion that extended well beyond playing sports and being an athlete himself. At around the age of 12, he began to collect sports memorabilia. A very unique love for collecting memorabilia that would span the next 70 years. Throughout his life’s journey, Angelo amassed a collection of trading cards, photos, equipment, and other memorabilia items that collectively represent a historical depiction of sports and athletes dating back to 1870. As mentioned over 20 years ago, “Hamilton’s Angelo Savelli has built one of the greatest collections of sports memorabilia in North America.” – Scott Radley, The Hamilton Spectator, Feb 9, 2006.  An amazing feat, indeed.

Forever, Angelo will be remembered for his love and adoration of family, especially his three sons and grandchildren.  He will also be remembered by many who encountered him on the ice or on a field or at a sports memorabilia convention as a person with an undying passion for sport and its history.

Friends and Family will be received at the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek, on Thursday, March 21, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a Funeral Service to follow in the Funeral Home Chapel at 1p.m.
