Obituary of Nikola Mrmak
With broken hearts we announce the passing of Nikola Mrmak in his 76th year. Cherished husband of 37 years to Cathy (nee Ackerman). Loving father to Marko (Amanda) and Melissa (John Rusich). Best Deda to Ava, Markus, Arileus and Elaria. Cherished brother of John (Sandra), Milka, Stevan (Mira), Savka (Vojo), Dragan and Nevenka (Ivan). Brother-in-law to Kim Hawkins (Steven) and Gordon Ackerman (Rita).
Nikola was born on August 27, 1948 in Village Gorice, Slavonija, Yugoslavia to parents Mihajlo and Jagoda Mrmak. At the age of 22, he moved to Niagara Falls, Canada and began working as a carpenter. Though he later would move and raise his family in Hamilton, Niagara Falls remained a large part of his life. He was proud to be a part of the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church and was a vibrant member of the Serbian communities in Niagara Falls and Hamilton. He enthusiastically looked forward to the annual SNF bowling tournament and volunteering at Holy Transfiguration Camp.
Nikola was an avid Steelers and Tiger Cats fan, bowler and never missed an opportunity to grab a coffee with his many friends. He had a great sense of humour and loved to share a good story. Family was Nikola’s life. He took pride in hosting family gatherings, holiday parties and Slava to bring together those he loved.
Nikola was an amazing, caring and devoted Caca to his children. He was the greatest Deda, forming a special and unparalleled bond with his grandchildren who will miss him dearly.
He will be remembered and greatly missed by many nephews, nieces, cousins, kumovi, friends and numerous relatives in both Europe and North America.
Friends will be received at the Donald V. Brown Funeral Home, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek on Wednesday, October 2nd from 4 to 8 p.m. Pomen will begin at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, 6085 Montrose Road, Niagara Falls on Thursday, October 3rd at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Lundy’s Lane Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Holy Transfiguration Camp at stsavafund@gmail.com or St. George Serbian Orthodox Church would be greatly appreciated.
